The liberation of routine.

As a free-spirited non-conformist, I’ve always found myself dismissive of routines and tended to embrace a non-committal approach to living. It wasn’t that I feared commitment or was a rebel at heart, it was simply because I was tied to the work schedules and deadlines that consumed my day to day.  I celebrated any opportunity to just simply be.  Time was not my own, thus I ensured that my free time remained just that – free.

When I was not traveling or working, spending time at home with no schedule to adhere to was a luxury.  The simple pleasure derived from rising without the boisterous sound of an alarm clock and not concerning myself with how much sleep I could squeeze in due to a 3 AM wake-up call was pure bliss.  It was work hard, play hard, crash and burn – repeat. The ‘no resolutions’ resolution.

We as human beings tend to go to extremes when it comes to anything in life. Spend cash like drunken sailors then restrict our spend like misers. Binge drink over the holidays then do DryJanuary. Stuff ourselves sick with sugar, fat and tasty treats then diet and exercise like mad come the new year.

‘Twas the night before Christmas.

Though I’ve had my Christmas tree and decorations up since Halloween -yes, you read that correctly! – I still cannot believe that Christmas is on our doorstep.  That being said, I also cannot believe that COVID-19 has kept us in most of this year and I’ve been working remotely since March.

Hours can pass like seconds and a year can fly in the blink of an eye.  As a child, it took forever for December 25th to land on the calendar and the end of the school year couldn’t come fast enough.  As an adult, we are baffled by the fact that we were 21 yesterday and woke up 51 today, thirty years passing so quickly that we hardly recognize that aging soul staring back at us in the mirror. Girl, that wrinkle fairy has been coming around!  Continue reading “‘Twas the night before Christmas.”

L.O.V.E.

They say that love is what makes the world go round and I think most of us would agree.  We spend our lives chasing it, finding it, working to keep it – and losing it.  For the fortunate ones, they find their once in a lifetime. For the less fortunate ones, they spend their lifetime trying.

Many relationships look perfect on the outside and you wonder what their secret is. They seem satisfied, content and well – happy.  You know them.  They are the couples and families who photograph beautifully on the holiday card, shining bright from the inside out, radiating love and all it entails.  We are fully aware that in reality, no relationship is perfect and as effortless as some may seem, even those couples have their struggles. If tomorrow never comes.

“My husband, best friend and whole world passed away yesterday after snow blowing and shoveling. The whole world shattered between 2:46 pm and and 4:10pm.”

My day started reading that post and my heart broke. Shock, sadness and heartbreak consumed me at once when I read that a high school classmate’s husband passed so suddenly. Having followed their lives over the years and been privy to the love they shared with all of us so freely, I was stunned.
