There is confusion among some on the difference between Memorial and Veterans Day. Ask a child today what the difference is and many don’t know. Something to do with veterans. Something to do with the military. Something to do with flags.
I respect anyone who tries, anyone who respects our military and those who have served and sacrificed. I respect those who fly the flag, even if they’re unaware of proper protocol. I respect the fact that they are patriotic and harbor a love for country and national pride.
Veterans and older generations can be understandably upset when the flag isn’t displayed correctly or a hat is not removed when the National Anthem is played. To those in my life, I gently remind them that these people are making an effort. It’s patriotism – over perfection. It’s not to be judged, yet appreciated.
Many have lost their sense of rationale and reason, empathy and understanding. We see only extremes and an ‘us against them’ mentality. We condemn rather than teach. We choose sides rather than stand our ground – which may be someplace in the middle and in my opinion, is more of what we need.
This weekend, we remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice. We honor the fallen. We commemorate their service. That is Memorial Day. That is why we have this three-day weekend.
I am well aware and respectful of the fact that not everyone believes in God. America is a melting pot compromised of immigrants who helped to build this nation, various cultures and religions.
In this lies the beauty of our country, to be celebrated, not condemned – please don’t let politics and media divide us. There is room for everyone in this free country and, respectfully, in God I trust – to bless the USA and our world.
So this Memorial Day, remember those who sacrificed for that freedom and honor the fallen.
God Bless the U.S.A.
If tomorrow all the things were gone
I worked for all my life
And I had to start again
With just my children and my wife
I thank my lucky stars
To be living here today
‘Cause the flag still stands for freedom
And they can’t take that away
And I’m proud to be an American
Where at least I know I’m free
And I won’t forget the men who died
Who gave that right to me
And I’d gladly stand up next to you
And defend Her still today
‘Cause there ain’t no doubt
I love this land
God Bless the U.S.A.
From the lakes of Minnesota
To the hills of Tennessee
Across the plains of Texas
From sea to shining sea
From Detroit down to Houston
And New York to L.A.
Where’s pride in every American heart
And it’s time we stand and say
That I’m proud to be an American
Where at least I know I’m free
And I won’t forget the men who died
Who gave that right to me
And I’d gladly stand up next to you
And defend Her still today
‘Cause there ain’t no doubt
I love this land
God Bless the U.S.A.
And I’m proud to be an American
Where at least I know I’m free
And I won’t forget the men who died
Who gave that right to me
And I’d gladly stand up next to you
And defend Her still today
‘Cause there ain’t no doubt
I love this land
God Bless the U.S.A.
