As a mentor for The Elephant Academy writing course, I crafted this based on the ask for their first assignment. My contribution focuses on home and what it means to me.
There are houses, and there are homes. A house provides shelter to meet our fundamental needs, but a home is so much more.
A home should be one’s refuge. It may be filled with the things that bring us joy and comfort, like heirlooms and photos. It may be sparse, an open space with a minimalist approach that gives us a sense of freedom. We create a home that meets our needs, displays our own sense of personal style and reflects our soul.
A home can tell a story without uttering a word.
My home is filled with love, though I live in solitude with my greatest joy of all – a furry little wonder who stole my heart at first glance. I relish in the delight of her wagging tail and canine kisses, her unconditional love and complete trust a gift that fills me with endless delight. In her I have found a best friend, companion and true sense of purpose.
Each time I turn the key to unlatch the lock to my home, an overwhelming sense of peace and contentment consumes me when I open the door. I flick the switch to illuminate the space within in ambient lighting, especially selected to soothe, and breathe in the signature aroma that fills the air.
It is more than a house to me. It is my sanctuary.
It was decorated not with a superficial, materialistic need but rather an introspective approach that reflects much thought, deliberation and intent. It displays my traditional taste and eclectic likes. At first glance one might label it conservative and maybe a bit old fashioned, yet closer examination will reveal my quirky and soulful nature as well as the many layers of my personality.
Home is my personal escape. It is where I feel most at ease. It is a space that provides me with tranquility. I relish in the quiet, calm atmosphere where I can allow my mind to wander and my body to relax.
You will most often find music playing and books scattered here or there. The kettle is always on the boil and scented candles likely lit. A window is surely cracked, if not fully open, to let in the fresh air and sounds of nature.
It is not only a dwelling, but where I dwell – in possibilities, just like Emily Dickinson.
An invitation to my home means that you hold a very special place in my heart. My home is not a playground for just anyone to frolic and hang. Privacy, seclusion and solitary pleasure are things I cherish the most. These are my luxuries and to share them with others is the greatest wealth I have to give.
For when you step over the threshold, you become part of the fabric that weaves the story of my life. You have added to the memories held within these walls that shelter me and therefore, are now forever a part of this home – and this heart.
And we all know – home is where the heart is.
